How to get to Puerto Morelos and Posada El Moro

Puerto Morelos is only 15 miles south of the international Airport in Cancun (see map above) and you can get there conveniently by car, bus or taxi:

RENTAL CAR

If you rent a car at the airport, go to the airport exit and drive two miles to the east to the intersection with the Cancun-Tulum expressway (see map above).

  1. At the intersection, you turn right (south) towards Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos.

  2. After driving about 15 miles on the expressway, you will enter a populated area, and you will see a traffic light and a big sign welcoming you to Puerto Morelos.

  3. Turn left (east) at the light and onto a two lane road which passes through a lagoon before it reaches the town of Puerto Morelos after one and a half mile.

  4. The first buildings you pass are municipal offices and the police headquarters. Just before the Town Square (zocalo), turn left on Av. Javier Rojo Gomez and after around 50 yards you will see on your left the two-story Posada El Moro just in front of the restaurant “Don Pepe Ole”.

    BUS

    If you feel adventurous and travel light, you should try the available bus and taxi service. At the Cancun international airport, there is bus service to Playa del Carmen (with stops along the road, including Puerto Morelos). Ask in the airport information desk about the bus to Playa del Carmen and they will direct you to the appropriate bus terminal. The bus ride is comfortable and safe. All the buses are new, have air conditioning and the drivers do not allow overcrowding. The bus fee to Puerto Morelos is around five dollars (50 pesos) per person and buses depart about every hour. The bus will take you to the Puerto Morelos bus stop on the Cancun-Tulum expressway, from where taxis that will take you directly into town and to Posada El Moro for around one dollar (10 pesos).

    TAXI

    Collective taxis will take you to Posada El Moro from the airport. The cost is $18.00 per person (80 pesos)  - children under 12 are free.

    What is "El Moro"

    El MoroPosada El Moro received its name from a crustacean of the species “Menippe Mercenaria” that inhabits the Puerto Morelos area. This interesting crab is known as “El Moro” due to the distinctive purple (morado) color of its shell. Under the name "Stone Crab", this animal is widespread throughout the Gulf of Mexico coastline.

    By using this symbol, Posada El Moro wishes to bring attention to this animal and to urge everyone to protect the crab and its natural habitat.

    In order to reduce our dependence on water supplied by the county, Posada El Moro takes advantage of the following renewable, non-polluting resources to service its lodgers: 

    Rain water collection

    Have you ever showered with rain water?  Although we have tap water from the county, the Posada El Moro buildings have a rain water capture system that allows us store and use rain water in our bathrooms. The next time that you take a shower in Posada El Moro, remember that the water that you are using was, not long ago, only passing clouds on the Caribbean. So you can relax and enjoy your visit, well knowing that we try our best to be as gentle on the environment as possible.
